Comtrend Announces WifiXtend™- a New Technology for Service Providers to Effortlessly Deploy Customer Access Points

Irvine, California – April 13, 2017,

Comtrend, a leading designer and manufacturer of broadband communications equipment, announced today the availability of WifiXtend™, a new and innovative technology for Service Providers that allows simplified Wireless expansion when deploying Wireless Access Points.

WifiXtend™ is a software technology that allows one or more Access Points to be deployed without configuration. Access Points with WifiXtend™ will automatically duplicate the wireless security settings from the Comtrend gateway. This allows Service Providers to expand a customer’s wireless coverage at home or work by simply connecting the new Access Point to the gateway’s network. Technicians are not required to configure the devices or press any buttons, because the customer’s existing devices will instantly connect to the new, high power Access Point.

This new technology works in tandem with Comtrend’s ongoing commitment to TR-069, the management technology used by Service Providers to manage their vast networks. Using an Auto-Configuration System, or ACS, allows central management of all devices that adhere to the TR-069 standard, including Comtrend’s latest business-class Access Points. Remote upgrades, configuration changes, and traffic analysis, allow Service Providers to provide best-in-class service to their customers. Combined with WifiXtend™, Service Providers can easily deploy and manage their customer’s Wireless networks for quick resolution of the most common wireless support issues and calls.

The Vice President of Technology in Comtrend North America, Kuma Lin, comments, “We always strive to create new technologies and solutions to support the Service Provider. With WifiXtend™, we are revolutionizing the way that deployments are done today. Using a Comtrend gateway, Service Providers will be able to setup a wireless Access Point simply by connecting Ethernet and power. Once connected, the gateway provides the IP Address and WiFi configuration without additional effort. Today, a Service Provider would have to log in to the UI to configure the SSID and password which is both troublesome and time consuming.”

Comtrend continues to create new solutions for Service Providers and is on schedule to release its next installment in Q2, 2017.

Comtrend PG-9172 G.hn Powerline Adapter Review

The Comtrend PG-9172 G.hn Powerline Adapter is both fast and expensive. The new adapter in fact replaces replaces the ZyXel PLA5206KIT as the fastest power line adapter I’ve seen, albeit by just a small margin. Unfortunately, at $130 for a kit of two or $70 for a single unit, it’s also currently among the most expensive of its type, costing twice the price of its contender. (Pricing for UK and Australia will be announced at a later date.)     To make up for that, the Comtrend PG-9172 is very easily to use. With two units, you can quickly turns existing electrical wiring of a home into a network cable, hence conveniently extends a wired network to a far corner of the home. With speed several times faster than regular Ethernet, the Comtrend PG-9172 G.hn is an excellent fix when you need to bring Internet to a place where Wi-Fi signal can’t reach, such as the basement. All things considered, there’s not much to complain about the new adapter, other than the cost. Comtrend does say that the street price will likely be lower so you should wait a while before getting your own. In the meantime, if you need a power line solution right away, consider one of these other excellent choices on this list of top power line adapters.

Design and setup

Similar to many power line adapters on the market, the Comtrend PG-9172 uses a traditional snap-in design, meaning it looks like a three-prong power adapter of a small electronic and you can easily plug it into any wall socket. Measuring 3.7 inches by 2.4 inches by 1.4 inches (93mm x 59.6mm x 35mm), the PG-9172 is not huge but it’s not exactly compact, either. In my trial, the adapter could easily block an adjacent wall socket. This, plus the fact it doesn’t have a pass-through socket means you might have problem finding a suitable socket to plug it in. This is a rather common problem with power line adapters of this design and is made worse by the fact that in order to function optimally they all need to be plugged directly into the wall, and not via a power strip or surge protector. On one side, the PG-9172 adapter has a Gigabit network port and on top it has three indicator lights for the connection strength, network status and security. Near the network port, there’s a configuration button to turn on the adapter’s security feature. Similar to existing power line adapters, setting up the PG-9172 is a simple and easy process, but if you need help, there’s a clearly illustrated instruction poster included. First you hook up one of the adapters to your existing router (or switch) using a network cable (a short cable included with the adapter). Then connect a second adapter to an Ethernet-ready device, such as a computer, a printer or even a Wi-Fi access point. Then plug each adapter into a power socket and you’re done. The adapters now use the electrical wiring in between the two sockets as a network cable. Note that in order to create the first power line connection, which allows you to add one wired device to the existing network, you need two adapters. After that you need just one more adapter for each additional device. The general rule of power line networking is you buy a number of power line adapters equal to the number of wired clients (computers, printer, game consoles and so on) plus one. The extra unit connects to the existing router (or switch) and brings the network to the rest of other adapters. With the PG-9172, you can add up to 16 devices a power line network, which is generally the case with most power line adapters.

Comtrend Announces Development of G.Fast Gateway Series with Fiber-Like Speeds over Existing Copper Wire

Comtrend’s G.fast Gateways will enable a more cost-efficient strategy than today’s Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) installations.

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) May 05, 2016
Comtrend, a leader in xDSL Gateways and advanced networking solutions, has announced its development of their first G.fast VDSL Gateway, the GFR-9510. The GFR-9510, through G.fast technology, uses the existing copper infrastructure to offer gigabit speeds over short distances, making it the ideal alternative to FTTH installations.

Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Comtrend North America, John DiFrenna, comments “Pragmatically speaking, it’s simply too expensive to deploy fiber to all non-green-field homes. Service providers will soon be able to offer hundreds of megabytes of service to customers without seeking additional debt to finance the every-home fiber-initiative. Taking full advantage of existing copper with the strategic placement of the DPUs lowers the cost of G.fast to roughly one-fifth the cost of fiber. We’re pushing our efforts and our partners to bring this to market by the first half of 2017.”

Service Providers have long enjoyed their deployed copper, making the addition of G.fast an excellent option. Instead of the time-consuming, customer-inconveniencing, home-installation of fiber, G.fast can be deployed without trenching fiber to every residence. In addition, G.fast technology is able to reach download speeds of 500Mbps-700Mbps within 200 meters of a home. The average cost for a 200 meter connection is estimated to be below $300, or approximately one-fifth the cost of fiber to the home. This type of deployment uses fiber to a distribution point and existing copper for the final segment. Comtrend’s GFR-9510 is ground-breaking, offering triple technology access: G.fast, VDSL, and Ethernet WAN. Service Providers can deploy one unit in three different scenarios. Additionally, the GFR-9510 boasts the latest broadband gateway technologies: a Dual Core ARM A9, 64-bit, 1GHz processor, Dual-Band AC2050 wireless, and all gigabit Ethernet ports.

The telecommunications industry has long sought the use of copper to deliver fiber-like speeds to customers that need high-bandwidth applications and
services such as streaming of HD TV, UHD/4K TV, OTT services, access to cloud-based resources, and online gaming. Today, G.fast looks to address this
need that may delay fiber to the home indefinitely.

This GFR-9510 will be available to sample in the second half of 2016.
