  • Comtrend Announces TR-143-Standards Based, Zero-Touch CAF Testing Solutions for Service Providers

Comtrend’s non-intrusive, zero-touch CAF solutions help Service Providers easily comply with FCC testing requirements while also offering additional benefits for an enhanced user experience.

Irvine, CA—Comtrend, a leader in broadband networking for Service Providers, announced today the launch of two TR-143-based solutions that address the latest FCC testing requirements for the Connect America Fund (CAF): Comtrend’s ACS 3.0 and Fine Point’s Speed Master. Unlike “white box” solutions that require additional hardware within the end user’s home, both of these offered CAF solutions are software-based and utilize the existing Comtrend Gateway. This allows Service Providers to remotely upgrade the Gateway to support the CAF solution without end user engagement or interruption. There is no need for a costly truck roll to the home to install a new “white box” monitoring device that may cause privacy concerns. Today, Comtrend offers these two solutions to meet the dynamic requirements of Service Providers:

First, Comtrend has released its enhanced ACS 3.0 that includes a CAF module that follows TR-143 specifications for FCC-compliant performance testing. Comtrend’s ACS 3.0 is a low-cost solution for Service Providers that want a CAF solution with the added benefits of an ACS. This is an easy option for current Comtrend ACS customers or Service Providers that exclusively use Comtrend Gateways. Comtrend’s ACS 3.0 functionality not only includes all standard provisioning features, but goes further to add new features such as a customer service representative (CSR) dashboard, G.hn Powerline diagnostic integration, and end-to-end speed testing (Gateway WAN to Internet, Gateway to node, node to remote device).

Second, Comtrend has partnered with Fine Point Technologies, a leading provider of software tools that connect network operators to their customers, to offer Speed Master, a modular addition to the Mountain View ACS. This is a robust CAF solution with the added benefits of an ACS with powerful analytics. This solution is ideal for Service Providers who also are already interested in an ACS. The tests will be performed following TR-143 specifications, and have a simplified, intuitive user-interface for easy compliance. Additionally, Mountain View enables tools to proactively identify consumer trends, up-sell customers who need more bandwidth, remotely troubleshoot WiFi issues, and much more.

Comtrend North America’s VP of Technology, Kuma Lin, comments, “We are very excited to announce our TR-143-based CAF reporting solutions that will support all speed tiers and can take advantage of existing Comtrend Gateways. Our solutions will be available across our multiple access technologies including ADSL, A/VDSL, Ethernet, and more. These are end-to-end solutions that simplify the FCC testing requirements, all while offering additional management features to enhance the user experience.”

Both Comtrend’s ACS 3.0 and Fine Point’s Speed Master have been designed to meet CAF requirements, however, each solution goes beyond this functionality to bring additional unique benefits. Comtrend Announces Its First WiFi 6 Gateway to Service Providers

In support of Service Providers, Comtrend introduces the VR-3071, a WiFi 6 VDSL Gateway, featuring the next evolutionary step in wireless technologies.

Service Providers have an increasing demand for better WiFi from the Gateways they provide to their home and business customers. WiFi 6 is touted as tomorrow’s solution, arriving today. The demand for better wireless continues to grow due to the exponential increase in wireless devices. The quantity is only one factor, as the quality of connection is being driven by such bandwidth-intensive items as video-streaming door cameras, ultra-high-definition televisions, split-second player vs. player games, telemedicine, and much more. Comtrend’s new VR-3071 showcases WiFi 6 in a VDSL Gateway to enable Service Providers entrance to this new platform of wireless standardization.

Previous wireless standards were relatively ill-equipped to handle the multitude of simultaneous connections, a problem addressed by WiFi 6’s technology: Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA). Designed to overcome this specifically, it reduces the wireless congestion that plagues busy homes, public areas, and offices. The increase in efficiency covers the quantity of connected devices and improves their individual connections by decreasing the interference with one another. In the real world, gaming consoles compete to consume bandwidth at the lowest latency possible, allowing gamers with better connections a competitive advantage. WiFi 6 brings these connections closer to wire speed.

Like the development of the Internet, what once started slow is blazing fast now. The adoption of WiFi 6 across consumer electronics is already underway faster than any previous wireless generation and Service Providers will want to get ahead of the curve. Devices that support WiFi 6 will not get the advantages from routers with previous generations of WiFi (i.e. WiFi 5). While it will take years for the vast array of wireless devices, including printers, garage door openers, smart lights, etc., to gain WiFi 6, it is clear that the number one type of device, the phone, will arrive in the short term from the major manufacturers.

Service Providers continually list WiFi problems as the number one customer service call. Comtrend’s commitment to emerging technologies, including the VR-3071 with WiFi 6, addresses this head on. Combined with industry standard TR-069 protocol, multi-platform CAF II solution support, and the latest G.hn Powerline technology, Comtrend seeks to solve Service Provider problems.

John DiFrenna, Vice President of Sales and Marketing states, “We are excited to announce the addition of the WiFi 6 enabled VR-3071 to our Comtrend gateway portfolio. This new wireless technology is on the cusp of large-scale adoption as enabled devices from manufacturers in varying categories begin to become available in the marketplace. As our Service Provider’s customers have access to those devices, early deployment of the associated gateways will allow them to immediately take full advantage of the WiFi improvements. This is a great marketing opportunity for our Service Providers. “

Comtrend’s lineup of gateways that feature WiFi 6 will start with the single-line VDSL gateway with more to follow.  For live updates on Comtrend’s WiFi 6 Lineup, visit:  https://us.comtrend.com//wifi-6/

Comtrend Announces the Launch of NexusLink, a New Company Focused on Innovative Connectivity Alternatives for Residential and Business Users

Comtrend’s launch of NexusLink allows for separate strategic focuses to drive long-term value for their Service Provider and Residential/Business-user industries respectively.

    IRVINE, CA

Comtrend, a leader in networking technologies for over 25 years, has announced the launch of a new company, NexusLink, and its intention to separate its Service Provider and Residential/Business markets for more dedicated focus. NexusLink will build on the foundation of Comtrend’s experience providing robust and reliable networking solutions and direct it toward the residential and business users.

NexusLink’s mission is to offer best-in-class, high-performance networking alternatives that complement existing infrastructures. When it comes to networking homes and business, the ideal connection medium is Ethernet cable (Cat5e/6). However, it’s often the case that Ethernet cable is not present, and installing Ethernet is both time-consuming and expensive. NexusLink is purpose-driven to remedy these types of networking scenarios. NexusLink designs, manufactures, and supports innovative home and business networking solutions with the most advanced technologies such as G.hn Powerline and G.hn Coax.

The General Manager of Comtrend North America, John Castreje, states, “Our decision to launch NexusLink as a distinctly separate company from Comtrend allows us to maximize customer-focused efforts in our independent industries, optimize our value creation, and drive growth. As standalone companies, Comtrend and NexusLink will be better positioned to solve their customer’s unique challenges.”

NexusLink currently has product available in Etail channels and will make its first appearance exhibiting at the upcoming ISC West show April 9-12 in Las Vegas at booth #41026. For more information on Comtrend and NexusLink please visit their websites us.comtrend.com and nexuslinkusa.com respectively.

Chunghwa Telecom selects Comtrend G.hn adapters with MaxLinear chips for coax, powerline FTTx

Taiwanese service provider Chunghwa Telecom (TAIEX 2412, NYSE: CHT) will use G.hn adapters from Comtrend powered with G.hn ICs from MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL) for gigabit services via FTTx, according to the chip provider. Chunghwa Telecom will use two adapters, one for coax connections and the other for broadband over powerline.

Comtrend will deliver its GCA-6000 G.hn Ethernet over Coax Adapter and PG-9173 a G.hn Ethernet over Powerline Adapter for the gigabit broadband services roll out. MaxLinear says its 88LX3142 and 88LX2718 G.hn ICs power the two adapters. Use of the adapters will enable Chunghwa Telecom to use existing wiring to deliver fixed network connections to their FTTx subscribers.

“Our GCA-6000 G.hn Ethernet over Coax Adapter and PG-9173 G.hn Ethernet over Powerline Adapter are optimized to meet the needs of broadband service providers that need guaranteed gigabit performance in their customers’ homes,” said Leon Lin, vice president of business development at Comtrend. “By using MaxLinear’s G.hn platform, we ensure we meet our customer requirements today, while having the flexibility to adapt to new requirements (such as cloud-based AR, VR or 8K video) in the future.”

“For years Comtrend and MaxLinear engineers have worked together to build extremely successful G.hn solutions for the carrier market,” added Will Torgerson, vice president and general manager of the MaxLinear Broadband Group. “We are confident that Chunghwa Telecom’s deployment of the Comtrend GCA-6000 and PG-9173 will continue this trend.”

G.hn is an ITU-T standard for broadband services delivery over coax, electrical wiring, and telecom twisted-pair cables (see “ITU-T approves G.hn as global standard for wired home networking”).

It is an alternative to similar approaches such as MoCA and Gfast.
